Project Description

Liquid Nitrogen Show

What’s cooler than cool? Liquid nitrogen! Learn all about the states of matter and what happens when we heat things up and cool things down with our super cool chemical nitrogen. Lots of ice breaking volunteer moments, chilling demonstrations and even a frosty explosion- learn all about reversible and irreversible reactions with us!  A cool 60-minute show.  For a taste of our Liquid Nitrogen Show, please see the short video below.

  • Level: Foundation to Year 12

  • Duration: 60 minutes

  • Numbers: Suitable for up to 240 students

  • Cost: $1295 plus GST per show

  • Travel surcharge also applies based on location

  • State: ONLY AVAILABLE IN VIC.

Fantastic physical changes and cool chemical reactions!

  • Learn about all the different states of matter; solid, liquid and gas in a fun and engaging way!

  • We’ll freeze, smash and shatter everyday materials in front of your eyes.

  • Witness a bone-chilling explosion as liquid nitrogen gas rapidly expands.

  • Volunteers will be asked to blow up balloons in the most unusual way.

  • Experience colourful, exothermic reactions that will make you go WOW!

Learning Outcomes

  • Liquid nitrogen is very cold and it is a liquid that can boil at room temperature.

  • Students will be able to identify solid, liquids and gases.

  • Students should be able to explain what happens when you heat up a state of matter (add energy) and cool down a state of matter (take away energy).

  • A physical reaction is when you mix two or more chemicals and they physically look different, however, no new chemicals are created in the process.

  • A chemical reaction is when you mix two or more chemicals and new chemicals are produced, such as a gas. This is often irreversible.

  • Some chemical reactions yield a lot of energy. These are called exothermic reactions.

  • Fire requires three elements; oxygen, heat energy, and fuel.

Victorian Curriculum Links – Foundation to Year 6

  • Changes to materials can be reversible, including melting, freezing, evaporating, or irreversible, including burning and rusting (VCSSU077)

  • Solids, liquids and gases behave in different ways and have observable properties that help to classify them (VCSSU076)

  • Heat can be produced in many ways and can move from one object to another; a change in the temperature of an object is related to the gain or loss of heat by the object (VCSSU063)

  • A change of state between solid and liquid can be caused by adding or removing heat (VCSSU059)

  • Respond to and pose questions, and make predictions about familiar objects and events (VCSIS050)

  • Compare observations and predictions with those of others (VCSIS054)

Victorian Curriculum Links – Year 7 to Year 10

  • The properties of the different states of matter can be explained in terms of the motion and arrangement of particles (VCSSU096)

  • Chemical change involves substances reacting to form new substances (VCSSU098)

  • Identify questions, problems and claims that can be investigated scientifically and make predictions based on scientific knowledge (VCSIS107)

Australian Curriculum Links

  • A change of state between solid and liquid can be caused by adding or removing heat (ACSSU046)

  • Solids, liquids and gases have different observable properties and behave in different ways (ACSSU077)

  • Changes to materials can be reversible or irreversible (ACSSU095)

  • Science involves observing, asking questions about, and describing changes in, objects and events (ACSHE034)

  • Pose and respond to questions, and make predictions about familiar objects and events (ACSIS037)

  • Compare observations with those of others (ACSIS041)
